SPCA Helps Homeless Dogs Find Their Forever Homes By Teaching Them How To Drive A Car

SPCA Helps Homeless Dogs Find Their Forever Homes By Teaching Them How To Drive A Car

Jeni Hans January 24, 2021

People always say that dogs are smart. Smarter than humans even. They can quickly learn tricks and are even known to understand basic speech. Many dogs also learn to use words associated with different activities such as walk, eat, play, and even complicated words like happy and angry.

But while these dogs are considered smart because they can learn tricks, have you ever seen a dog that is so smart that he can drive a car? You heard that right. Hundreds of dogs in the US are left abandoned by their owners. Many of these homeless dogs end up in shelters or rescue facilities.

Rescued pups are given a second chance to find their forever homes, but it is not that simple for most abandoned dogs. Given their past, many families stay away from them, fearing that they might become aggressive. But the reality is, all homeless dogs only want to be loved. So much so that groups such as the SPCA came up with unique ideas to give attention to many stray dogs such as Porter.

In hopes of getting attention to the thousands of homeless dogs in their care, SPCA has taught dogs like Porter to drive a car! While this endeavor was started more than eight years ago, the group has successfully given the spotlight to many dogs like Porter.

They start training dogs to drive in a makeshift chair with a steering wheel and a gear shifter. On command, the dogs then move the gear shift lever and switch the car to drive mode. Slowly, the car then starts to roll forward. It is fascinating to watch Porter hold the steering wheel with one paw while the other is on the gear shift lever. He looks just like a person driving a car!

Who wouldn’t want to adopt these smart and talented dogs? Watch the short clip of Porter and his buddies learn how to drive in the video below.
