When Sandra Pineda, a 22-year-old medical student from the Philippines, posted a picture of her dog, Piper, online, she didn’t know that it would cause quite a stir. In less than an hour of posting online, her photo has been liked 10,000 times.
A lot of people were quite confused because the dog looked like it was a statue. But in fact, Piper is a Xoloitzcuintli, also known as Xolo. It is a rare hairless Mexican dog that is an ancient breed dating back 3,500 years ago. They were kept by the Mayans and the Aztecs and have been the subject of paintings by many famous Mexican artists.
With its smooth and shiny dark skin, photos of piper did indeed looked like he was made out of granite, or maybe even steel.
Piper
Sandra bought Piper when he was merely two-months-old. According to her, he was the most majestic dog she has ever seen. Although she’s dismayed that some people don’t see the beauty in the breed, she’s hopeful that more people will appreciate the Xolo because of her post.
When the comments started coming in, she thought that the people were only joking. But she realized later on that they were indeed confused. A lot of people have not seen the Xolo breed and they really thought that he was a statue. Numerous comments were sincerely asking if the dog was real or not.
She took the comments negatively at first, but she had a change of perspective later on. Being mistaken for a work of art was a compliment towards her dog. His uniqueness is part of what makes him so precious to Sandra.
In any case, she won’t be affected by what other people say. She appreciates all the positive comments and ignores the rest. She loves her gentle and playful dog so much, and nothing would ever change that.
