Puppy Saved From An Alligator Gets Recruited As The Newest Deputy Dog

Puppy Saved From An Alligator Gets Recruited As The Newest Deputy Dog

Jeni Hans January 26, 2021

Gunner, an adorable Cavalier puppy, has fully recovered from his traumatic encounter with an alligator. Ever since his dad rescued him from the alligator, Gunner has gained fame because of his strong will to survive and his bravery. Gunner and his fur dad were rewarded for their bravery, and the pup was even appointed as a deputy dog.

It was one nice morning a few weeks back when Gunner and his fur dad were taking a walk when a ravenous alligator jumped out of a pond to attack the pup. The four-month-old pup was immediately trapped on the alligator’s jaws and was being dragged inside the pond when his dad came running to rescue him. Despite the alligator’s quick attack, Gunner’s dad, Richard Wilbanks, instantly came to his pup’s rescue.

He jumped into the water and wrestled the alligator until the reptile let go of the terrified pup. Richard promptly brought Gunner to a nearby vet to get him checked. Fortunately, Gunner did not receive any serious injury and was soon sent home with his brave dad.

Richard expressed that he loves his dog so much that he could not just watch and allow the alligator to take him away, so he did what he could to save his dear pup. Because of Richard and Gunner’s fight for survival and bravery, The Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida honored the pup with the noble title of “safety and security officer for deputy dogs.” Gunner gladly accepted his new title beside his father, who seemed like the proudest fur dad in the world.

We congratulate Gunner for his incredible achievement and wish him the best! We hope fur parents will also learn from Gunner’s story about keeping their fur babies safe around wildlife. You can watch Gunner’s recruitment video below.
